day 1 – Wakefield, Massachusetts to Harpswell, Maine to Poland, Maine

Miles driven day 1: 180

Monday morning: We decided to take our time and follow route 1 instead of 295, to see more interesting things and avoid tolls. We made one quick stop at Hannaford for our essential groceries, and ate a snacky lunch in the car.

Monday afternoon: at Harpswell we wanted to check out a lighthouse from the 1870s, a bridge to one of the islands, and a quick hike.

The bridge goes from a peninsula to an island. It’s held up by gravity…the bricks are just stacked up with spaces in between to let the tides go through.

The bridge is narrow with barely enough space to fit two cars…We like it a lot.

We drove to the furthest point on the island, where the road ends and there’s a big gift shop called “lands end”. (Get it?) This is where we thought we could see the (possibly haunted) lighthouse but because of the fog we couldn’t see much at all. It was ok though. We walked out on the rocks and I pet a lobster.

On the center peninsula the we took the Cliff Walk, a somewhat challenging short hike. It goes through the woods, through some fairy neighborhoods, and along cliffs by the water. The loop we took was supposed to be 1.5 miles, but halfway through we passed a sign that said 1.5 miles to parking so I think we misunderstood something. We also got a little lost. But we made it out alive and it was a really good stretch for our legs for the first day.

We were late to our hosts house, where they had delicious home cooked fried rice waiting for us. We’re so thankful for the Landrys and their hospitality on our first night. They provided dinner and breakfast, showers, and a cozy night in their sweet guest house.

Their property is beautiful and they and Yoshi (I’m in love) were so warm and welcoming. We left warm, clean, full, and happy, ready for day 2!

Tuesday plans: drive to Bangor, visit the UMMA, the University of Maine’s Museum of Art (2 hour drive). drive to Acadia National Park (1 hour drive).  Explore Acadia in the car due to weather (hiking tomorrow, hopefully). Drive to the top of a mountain to sleep :)))

Weather: has been foggy and drizzly so far. Somewhat chilly but not freezing anywhere. Today in Bangor, forecast calls for mid 50’s and cloudy. This evening in Acadia, low 50’s, some showers.
